Pakistan’s Kunzite Turns Heads at Shanghai Expo

Pakistan’s precious gemstone industry just had a moment to remember. A massive 3,051-carat kunzite crystal from the mountains of northern Pakistan has made its dazzling debut in China, stealing the spotlight at the 8th China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai.

The gemstone isn’t just any mineral marvel  it holds the Guinness World Record as the largest unenhanced, gem-quality kunzite crystal ever discovered. It was showcased by WINZA, a Pakistani gemstone and jewellery brand that’s been quietly building a reputation for taking stones straight from the mine to the global luxury market.

“We wanted to show the world that Pakistan isn’t just about raw exports anymore,” said WINZA’s chairman while speaking at the event. “We’re now shaping, cutting, and designing world-class gems right at home.”

And it’s paying off. WINZA’s market share in China has grown from about 20% of its total sales seven years ago to more than 50% today. The brand’s Chinese business has been expanding at an impressive 30% per year since it first appeared at CIIE.

This year, Pakistan’s national pavilion brought together over 20 companies to highlight the country’s growing range of design-led exports from jewellery and marble to handicrafts and fashion. Officials see this as part of a larger strategy to diversify exports beyond textiles and raw minerals.

Industry observers say the gemstone’s debut is about much more than sparkle and size. It’s about identity a signal that Pakistan’s artisans, designers, and brands are ready to compete in the luxury segment of the global market.

As one visitor at the expo put it, “It’s not just the gem that shines; it’s the story behind it  where it comes from, who shaped it, and what it represents.”

For now, the giant kunzite remains the talk of the expo floor a shimmering reminder that Pakistan’s natural beauty and craftsmanship can hold their own on the world stage.
