LONDON: The BBC plunged into crisis on Sunday as both its Director General Tim Davie and Head of News Deborah Turness resigned following fierce criticism over alleged bias in the broadcaster’s coverage including the controversial editing of a speech by U.S. President Donald Trump.

The resignations came after a leaked internal report accused the publicly funded broadcaster of editorial failures in its coverage of the Isra@el-H@mas conflict, transgender issues, and the Trump documentary. The report, compiled by former standards adviser Michael Prescott, described “institutional bias” within the organization.

Trump celebrated the resignations, branding the executives “very dishonest people.” His criticism followed revelations that the BBC’s Panorama program spliced two parts of his speech, allegedly making it appear as though he was encouraging the January 6 Capitol riot.

Davie Takes Responsibility, Turness Rejects Bias Claim

Davie, who led the BBC since 2020, said he took “ultimate responsibility” for the broadcaster’s mistakes but defended its global reputation as a “gold standard in journalism.”
Meanwhile, Turness denied claims of institutional bias, telling staff the allegations were “categorically wrong.”

Despite the turmoil, the BBC remains Britain’s most trusted news brand, reaching millions through news, entertainment, and sports. Yet its licence fee funding model and perceived liberal tilt continue to attract criticism from both political extremes and social media commentators.

Leaked Report Exposes Internal Struggles

Prescott’s report revealed divisions within BBC departments. It said BBC Arabic displayed anti-Isra__el bias during Gaza coverage, while stories on gender and single-sex rights were reportedly suppressed by staff fearing backlash from transgender activists.

The findings intensified scrutiny of the BBC’s ability to uphold impartiality amid Britain’s increasingly polarized media landscape.

Scandals and Setbacks

The broadcaster’s credibility has already been dented by several controversies. In 2023, star presenter Gary Lineker was suspended after criticizing government immigration policy, sparking a newsroom walkout. More recently, the BBC faced backlash for airing anti-Israel chants at the Glastonbury Festival and for pulling a Gaza documentary linked to a Hamas official’s son.

Political Reaction and Next Steps

British Culture Minister Lisa Nandy thanked Davie for his service, while insiders said his sudden decision left the BBC board “stunned.” Davie will remain temporarily until a successor is appointed.

Davie emphasized that the BBC should be “championed, not weaponized,” acknowledging the growing challenges of maintaining trust in an era of media polarization.

The broadcaster now faces a crucial test ahead of its 2027 charter renewal, which determines its funding and independence.

Meanwhile, Chairman Samir Shah is expected to apologize to Parliament for the controversy, as the BBC seeks to repair its image and rebuild confidence in its editorial integrity.

Yess,BBC’s top leadership resigns amid uproar over alleged editorial bias and Trump documentary editing, triggering a deep crisis for the UK’s most trusted broadcaster.
