LAHORE — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif met in Lahore on Sunday to navigate a political landscape currently defined by legislative maneuvering and economic uncertainty.

The meeting, held at the party’s Jati Umra residence, focused on the government’s upcoming legislative agenda and the ongoing fallout from recent judicial developments. While official channels described the session as a routine consultation, the timing suggests a more urgent need for internal party cohesion.

The coalition government is currently pushing for key constitutional amendments, a move that has met stiff resistance from the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Nawaz Sharif, who has been steering party policy from the sidelines, reportedly emphasized the need for a unified front to ensure the government’s survival through the current parliamentary term.

Insiders familiar with the discussions say the two leaders touched upon the “dwindling” space for political consensus. With the opposition staging protests and questioning the legitimacy of the current assembly, the PML-N leadership is wary of a prolonged stalemate that could derail their economic recovery efforts.

“The party is under pressure,” said one senior PML-N official who requested anonymity. “They aren’t just discussing policies; they are discussing how to keep the coalition intact when the pressure from all sides is hitting a boiling point.”

The meeting also touched on the administration’s economic performance. Despite claims of stabilization, the government continues to face public backlash over high electricity tariffs and persistent inflationary pressure. Nawaz Sharif, sources claim, voiced concerns over the political cost of these policies, urging the Prime Minister to prioritize relief measures before the next fiscal cycle.

For the PML-N, the challenge is twofold: maintaining a working relationship with coalition partners while fending off legal and political challenges from the PTI. The meeting concluded without a formal press statement, leaving the opposition to speculate on the specifics of the “strategy” discussed behind closed doors.

As the National Assembly prepares for its next session, the message from Jati Umra is clear: the government intends to move forward with its legislative plans, regardless of the rising political temperature in Islamabad. Whether that resolve holds under the weight of mounting public discontent remains the defining question for the Sharif administration.
