CANBERRA: Shadab Khan delivered a match-winning performance with the ball, while Matthew Gilkes’ composed innings helped Sydney Thunder secure a dominant 34-run victory over Brisbane Heat in the ninth match of Big Bash League (BBL) 15 at Manuka Oval on Monday.

Chasing a challenging target of 194, Brisbane Heat managed 159 for six in their 20 overs. Despite a few steady partnerships, the visitors failed to maintain the required run rate as Thunder’s bowlers applied sustained pressure throughout the innings.

Matt Renshaw was the top scorer for Heat with a brisk 43 off 28 balls, hitting four boundaries and a six. Earlier, Colin Munro and Jack Wildermuth provided a positive start, adding 37 runs in 4.4 overs before Shadab Khan turned the game around with two wickets in a single over, dismissing both batters.

Renshaw later combined with Hugh Weibgen to add 70 runs off 47 balls, briefly reviving Heat’s chase. However, Shadab struck again to remove Renshaw, while Daniel Sams bowled Weibgen for 30, triggering a collapse that left Heat struggling at 115 for four.

With the required run rate climbing, Sydney Thunder tightened their grip through disciplined bowling and sharp fielding. Shadab’s economical 17th over, which conceded just two runs and produced a wicket, effectively sealed the contest, leaving Heat well short of the target.

Earlier, Matthew Gilkes played a key role with the bat, ensuring Thunder posted a competitive total that ultimately proved beyond Brisbane Heat’s reach.
