The report says traders sold about 7,990 Brent crude futures contracts, worth roughly $760 million, at 12:24–12:25 GMT on April 17, 2026—around 20 minutes before Iran’s foreign minister announced that the Strait of Hormuz was open to commercial shipping during the ceasefire period. After that announcement, oil prices fell sharply, with U.S. crude dropping about 12% to around $83 and Brent falling more than 10% to around $89.

Why this matters: the timing looks unusually precise, so it has raised questions about whether some traders had an informational edge before the public announcement. Reuters also noted this was not the first such trade during the recent Middle East conflict; similar large oil bets reportedly appeared before earlier war-related announcements too.
