The Government of Sindh has cancelled the construction contract for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Red Line project and decided to re-award it on an emergency basis, provincial minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced.

Speaking to the media, Memon said the decision was taken due to unsatisfactory performance and delays by the contractor, which had slowed progress on one of Karachi’s most important public transport projects. He added that the government could not afford further delays, given the project’s significance for commuters.

The BRT Red Line is a major initiative aimed at improving urban mobility in Karachi by providing a modern, efficient, and environmentally friendly mass transit system. However, construction setbacks have raised concerns among citizens and stakeholders.

Memon stated that the contract would now be re-awarded on an emergency basis to ensure that work resumes quickly. He emphasised that strict monitoring mechanisms would be put in place to avoid further delays and ensure timely completion.

Officials also indicated that legal and administrative procedures are being followed to terminate the previous agreement and select a new contractor. The move is expected to accelerate the pace of development and restore public confidence in the project.

The BRT Red Line is considered a key part of Karachi’s broader transport infrastructure plan, and authorities hope that the revised approach will help deliver the project within a reasonable timeframe.
