A new study has indicated that obesity may be a major cause behind the increasing cancer cases among individuals under the age of 50.
Although this explanation does not fully clarify the issue and more evidence is needed in this regard, scientists say that excess weight or obesity does play a role in cancer, possibly due to high insulin levels and inflammation in the body.
In recent years, researchers have been particularly concerned about the trend of rapidly increasing cancer cases among young people, including cancers of the intestine and ovaries.
In 2023, around 31,000 cancer cases were reported among individuals aged 20 to 49 in England, meaning approximately one in every thousand people.
In comparison, the number of cases among individuals aged 50 to 79 was much higher at 244,000, which is about one in every hundred people.
In the younger age group, breast cancer was the most common (8,500 cases), while 3,000 cases of intestinal cancer and 2,800 cases of melanoma skin cancer were also reported.
