President of the Karachi University Teachers Association, Syed Ghufran Alam; President of the Employees Welfare Association, Zahid Hussain Baloch; and President of the Officers Welfare Association, Faisal Hashmi, during a press conference.

Karachi (Staff Reporter): An emergency press conference was held at the Chinese Memorial Auditorium under the joint platform of the Karachi University Teachers Society (KUTS), Employees Welfare Association, and Officers Association against the ongoing financial and administrative crisis at the University of Karachi. During the conference, a detailed stance was presented regarding the current situation at the university, the protest movement, boycott of examinations, and the possibility of closure of the university.

The speakers at the press conference stated that the University of Karachi has been facing a severe financial crisis for several years, while the poor policies of the current administration have further worsened the situation. They alleged that instead of addressing the concerns of teachers, employees, and officers, the administration made unilateral decisions, which have negatively affected both the academic and administrative systems.

The teachers’ representatives said that allegations of irregularities and financial mismanagement worth more than 21 billion rupees have surfaced in the university, and transparent investigations into these matters are essential. They said the purpose of the protest is not to damage the university but to save the institution from destruction.

During the press conference, the administration was also accused of unnecessary expenditures, allegedly illegal recruitments, expensive projects, and misuse of resources. The speakers stated that new departments and programs were introduced at the university without providing the required resources and infrastructure, which has affected the quality of education.

The leaders said that the teachers, employees, and officers of the University of Karachi have been carrying out a protest movement for the past week and that the protests will continue until their demands are accepted. They appealed to the Government of Sindh, the Higher Education Commission, and relevant authorities to immediately intervene, help the university overcome the financial crisis, and ensure transparent accountability.

At the conclusion of the press conference, it was stated that if the issues are not resolved immediately, the scope of the protest could be expanded further. However, keeping in view the interests of the university and the future of the students, the doors for negotiations remain open.
