ISLAMABAD: The federal government has included MQM-P leader and Federal Education Minister Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui in the Economic Coordination Committee of the Cabinet, giving one of the ruling coalition’s key allies a seat at Pakistan’s most powerful economic decision-making table.

The ECC, chaired by Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, deals with urgent economic, fiscal and sectoral matters, ranging from subsidies and supplementary grants to energy, food stocks, public-sector entities and regulatory approvals. Its recent meetings have taken up decisions on issues such as wheat stock disposal, public-sector restructuring, affordable housing finance and technical supplementary grants, showing how central the forum remains to day-to-day economic management.

Siddiqui’s inclusion is politically significant as well. MQM-P is a coalition partner in Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s federal government, and the party has often pressed for greater attention to Karachi’s urban infrastructure, local government powers, employment, education and development spending. A place on the ECC gives Siddiqui direct access to discussions where many of those financial and policy decisions begin.

Dr. Siddiqui currently serves as the federal minister for Federal Education and Professional Training, according to the Cabinet Division’s list of federal ministers. He was elected MQM-P chairman in May 2024 after the party’s central committee chose him for the post, though the move drew objections from some disgruntled party figures at the time.

The development also comes at a moment when coalition management has become increasingly important for the government. With tight fiscal space, an IMF-linked reform agenda and pressure over energy prices and public spending, the ECC’s decisions can carry political costs. Bringing an MQM-P heavyweight into the committee may help the government keep its allies closer while navigating tough economic calls.

For MQM-P, the appointment offers a useful opening. The Karachi-based party can now push its priorities from inside a forum that approves funds, reviews subsidies and shapes key economic interventions. It may not guarantee every demand will be accepted, but frankly, it gives the party a louder voice where it matters.

Recent ECC meetings have been chaired by Finance Minister Aurangzeb and attended by federal ministers and senior officials from relevant ministries and divisions, depending on the agenda. With Siddiqui now added to the committee, MQM-P’s representation in federal economic discussions is expected to become more visible in the coming weeks.
