Good news for the citizens of Karachi: a new thoracic surgery ward and modern operation theatre have been inaugurated at the Benazir Bhutto Trauma Centre, Civil Hospital. The facility includes a 30-bed ward where complex surgeries of the chest, lungs, and heart can now be performed. Specialized thoracic surgery services for children have also been introduced.
According to hospital officials, patients suffering from tuberculosis, lung abscesses, lung cancer, tumors, and trauma-related lung injuries will no longer need to seek treatment at private hospitals, as these services are now available at the government facility.
Additionally, the hospital has introduced video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), a modern and minimally invasive surgical technique.
Dr. Jamshed Akhtar from the National Institute of Child Health stated that in some cases, air gets trapped in a child’s chest, a condition known as pneumothorax. While children generally recover well, complications can pose serious risks to their lives.
