ISLAMABAD: On World Blood Donor Day, the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) has called for increased voluntary blood donations and the strengthening of the country’s blood transfusion system to ensure safe and timely access for patients in need.

Health professionals emphasized that voluntary, non-remunerated blood donation is the safest source of blood supply and urged citizens—especially young people—to come forward and donate regularly. They also highlighted the importance of screening, proper storage, and regulation of blood banks to prevent transfusion-transmitted infections.

The PMA stressed that Pakistan faces a shortage of safe blood supplies and called on authorities to launch nationwide awareness campaigns to promote donation culture and improve emergency preparedness in hospitals.

Medical experts added that a well-organized blood transfusion system could save thousands of lives each year, particularly in emergencies, surgeries, and for patients with chronic illnesses.
