Pakistan has recorded its first death from Naegleria fowleri this year after a Karachi resident succumbed to the rare but highly fatal infection. Health authorities confirmed the case and urged the public to adopt preventive measures to reduce the risk of exposure.
The amoeba, commonly referred to as the “brain-eating amoeba,” is typically found in warm freshwater and can infect individuals when contaminated water enters the body through the nose. The infection causes primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), a severe disease that affects the brain and is often fatal.
Officials have advised citizens to ensure proper chlorination of water tanks and use clean or boiled water for nasal cleansing. Public awareness campaigns are also being intensified as temperatures continue to rise during the summer season.
