TANK — A major terrorist attack targeting a joint police checkpost in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Tank district has martyred 15 people, including 12 military soldiers, two policemen, and a government official from the forest department. According to the military’s media wing, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the early morning assault was orchestrated by Fitna-al-Khawarij (a term officially designated for the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan). The attackers initially attempted to breach the checkpost’s perimeter but were swiftly engaged by vigilant security forces, who eliminated 15 terrorists in a fierce exchange of fire. However, the remaining attackers subsequently rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into the facility’s perimeter wall, causing massive structural damage that resulted in the casualties.

The ISPR confirmed that an extensive sanitization operation is underway to locate any remaining terrorists in the area. The military reaffirmed its commitment to the relentless counter-terrorism campaign under the federally approved vision “Azm-i-Istehkam,” vowing to completely eradicate foreign-sponsored terrorism. This tragedy follows a series of escalating security encounters in the region, including an extensive joint intelligence-based operation in the adjoining Bannu district last week that eliminated 24 terrorists following a surge in local suicide bombings, as well as a similar vehicle-borne suicide attack on the Fateh Khel police post in May. According to data from the Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS), fatalities from militant violence in KP rose drastically from 1,620 in 2024 to 2,331 in 2025, prompting state forces to significantly intensify active counter-terrorism operations across the province.
