A new study suggests that humans may have spoken thousands more languages around 3,000 years ago than are spoken today, highlighting the dramatic loss of linguistic diversity over the course of human history.

Researchers believe that many ancient languages disappeared as populations migrated, communities merged and larger political powers expanded. The spread of empires, trade networks and dominant cultures may have gradually replaced smaller local languages.

The study highlights how languages can disappear when communities become smaller or are absorbed into larger societies. In many cases, languages may have vanished without leaving written records, making it difficult for researchers to determine exactly how many once existed.

Linguists have long warned that many of the world’s languages remain vulnerable to extinction. When a language disappears, communities can lose more than a means of communication, as languages often carry unique traditions, histories, cultural knowledge and ways of understanding the world.

The findings suggest that the number of languages spoken by ancient human populations may have been far greater than previously estimated. Researchers say the study provides new insight into the long-term evolution of human communication and the forces that shape linguistic diversity.

The research also highlights the importance of documenting and preserving endangered languages before they disappear.

Next Article KARACHI: MQM-P leader Mustafa Kamal has strongly criticised what he described as the continued injustice and deprivation faced by Karachi, announcing that his party will now take to the streets to raise its voice for the city’s rights. Speaking on the issue, Mustafa Kamal expressed concerns over the treatment of Karachi and the alleged failure to provide the city with its due share of resources, development and basic services. He said the people of Karachi had endured years of neglect and could no longer remain silent. The MQM-P leader stressed that Karachi plays a vital role in Pakistan’s economy and contributes significantly to the national exchequer. Despite this contribution, he claimed that the city continues to face serious challenges, including poor infrastructure, inadequate municipal services, traffic problems, water shortages and other civic issues. Mustafa Kamal said his party would intensify its political and public efforts to highlight Karachi’s problems. He announced that the MQM-P would organise street protests and mobilise citizens to demand the city’s rights. The announcement marks a shift towards a more confrontational public campaign by the party on Karachi-related issues. MQM-P leaders have repeatedly called for greater administrative and financial powers for the city and a fairer distribution of resources. The party’s decision to take to the streets could lead to increased political activity in Karachi as the MQM-P seeks to pressure the federal and provincial governments to address the city’s longstanding problems.
