The Sindh government has officially declared July 29 a public holiday across the province. The announcement came late Tuesday evening, confirming that all public and private offices, schools, and academic institutions will remain closed to mark the occasion of 10th Muharram.
The notification issued by the Services, General Administration, and Coordination Department covers all autonomous bodies, semi-autonomous bodies, corporations, and local councils under the provincial government’s jurisdiction. Essential services, however, are exempt from the closure to ensure emergency operations continue uninterrupted.
This day holds significant religious weight as the day of Ashura. For the provincial administration, the holiday serves a dual purpose: facilitating religious observances and managing the massive logistical challenge of securing mourning processions.
Security remains the government’s primary concern. The provincial home department has already finalized plans to deploy thousands of police officers across Karachi and other major cities. Mobile phone services are expected to face localized suspensions along designated procession routes—a standard security measure the Sindh government has relied on for years to prevent potential threats.
While the private sector is encouraged to observe the holiday, the notification does not explicitly mandate closures for businesses not affiliated with government operations. Many private firms typically follow the lead of the provincial government, though, with banks and stock markets expected to remain shut in line with the State Bank of Pakistan’s holiday schedule.
The government has urged citizens to cooperate with law enforcement and adhere to the traffic diversion plans that will be enforced throughout the day. With the city bracing for large-scale gatherings, the focus for the next 48 hours is entirely on maintaining order.
