PORTSMOUTH, United Kingdom: British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to the United Kingdom sends a “very clear message” of Britain’s unwavering support for Ukraine as the country continues to defend itself against Russia’s ongoing invasion.

Hosting Zelenskyy at a naval base in Portsmouth, Burnham noted that the Ukrainian leader was the first foreign leader he had welcomed since taking office, describing the decision as deliberate and symbolic. He said the visit underscored the UK’s commitment to standing with Ukraine “100%” and honoring every pledge made to Kyiv.

During the meeting, the two leaders discussed strengthening defence cooperation, including expanding joint drone production and improving Ukraine’s electronic warfare capabilities. Britain announced it would transfer the intellectual property for its “Stone Cloak” electronic warfare system, allowing Ukraine to manufacture the technology domestically to help protect its forces from Russian drone detection.

Burnham also reaffirmed that the United Kingdom would continue supporting Ukraine for “as long as it takes,” stressing that Russia should have no doubt about Britain’s resolve to help achieve a just and lasting peace. He said the partnership between London and Kyiv remains a key pillar of the UK’s foreign and security policy.

President Zelenskyy welcomed the strong backing from the British government, describing relations between the two countries as “stronger than ever.” He thanked Burnham for making Ukraine his first major international priority and said the visit was an important signal of continued international solidarity with the Ukrainian people.

The leaders also met more than 200 Ukrainian military personnel training in the UK under Exercise Sea Breeze, highlighting ongoing military cooperation between the two nations. Officials said the programme is aimed at improving operational readiness and strengthening Ukraine’s defence capabilities amid the continuing conflict.
