Karachi and several interior districts of Sindh finally saw relief from stifling heat today as light to heavy rainfall swept across the province. The downpour, which began in the early hours, brought temperatures down significantly, though it left the usual urban infrastructure struggles in its wake.

The Met Office confirmed the system originated from the Arabian Sea, pushing moisture deep into the province. While the rain offered a reprieve from the recent heatwave, the intensity varied sharply across regions. Dadu and Larkana reported heavy showers by midday, while Karachi saw intermittent, lighter spells that kept the mercury hovering in the low 30s.

For the provincial capital, the rain was a double-edged sword. Traffic crawled through water-logged arteries in areas like II Chundrigar Road and Shahrah-e-Faisal. By noon, K-Electric had already reported localized power outages across Orangi and Surjani Town, citing “safety protocols” during the wet weather.

Farmers in the upper districts, however, are welcoming the turn in weather. With the Kharif crop season underway, the moisture is a vital boost for soil health in a year where irrigation water has been chronically short.

“The crops were parched,” said Abdul Rahim, a farmer near Khairpur. “This rain isn’t just cooling the air; it’s saving our yield for this cycle.”

The provincial disaster management authority remains on alert, despite the current system being classified as moderate. They’ve warned of potential urban flooding if the downpour intensifies over the next 24 hours. Emergency teams are staged in low-lying areas, though residents remain skeptical given the city’s history of drainage failure.

The Met Office expects the system to linger through Thursday, with cloudy skies and gusty winds likely to dominate the coastal belt. For now, the sweltering heat that defined the last two weeks has retreated, replaced by a damp, cooling breeze that has finally cleared the streets of the mid-day glare.
