A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck near the Suez Canal on Tuesday, sending tremors across the canal zone and reaching as far as Cairo. Residents in Suez and Ismailia reported feeling the ground shake for several seconds, prompting brief evacuations of high-rise buildings and offices near the waterway.

The National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) confirmed the epicenter was located roughly 30 kilometers off the coast of Suez. While the quake registered a moderate 5.5 on the Richter scale, the depth of the tremor—roughly 10 kilometers—meant the surface impact was felt sharply by those in the immediate vicinity.

Shipping traffic through the Suez Canal remains unaffected. Port authorities conducted initial inspections of the canal infrastructure and confirmed that all navigational aids and transit operations are functioning normally.

“We felt the desk rattle and the windows vibrate,” said Ahmed Mansour, a logistics coordinator working at a facility near the canal. “It lasted maybe five or six seconds, but it was enough to make everyone head for the exits.”

Despite the localized alarm, emergency services reported no structural damage to the canal’s vital infrastructure or residential areas. Egypt’s seismic activity is typically concentrated in the Gulf of Aqaba or the Red Sea, making a tremor of this magnitude near the Suez Canal a notable, if infrequent, occurrence.

Geologists noted that the region sits on a complex tectonic interface, though historical data suggests this area is not prone to major, high-intensity seismic events. As of Tuesday evening, no aftershocks of significant concern had been recorded.

Local authorities continue to monitor the situation, but for now, the primary artery of global trade stays open for business.
