KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has urged tourists visiting the country’s northern regions to take greater responsibility for protecting the environment and keeping scenic destinations free from litter.
Afridi raised the issue through a social media post after visiting a mountainous area where plastic bottles, wrappers and other waste could be seen scattered around natural sites, including lakes and waterfalls.
Appealing to visitors, the former cricketer said tourists should enjoy the beauty of the northern areas without damaging the environment. He also joined efforts to clean up rubbish from the area, stressing that protecting Pakistan’s natural landscape was a shared responsibility.
Afridi said practical steps were also being taken to address the problem. He revealed that several dustbins were being arranged at different points in the area so visitors would have designated places to dispose of their waste.
During his visit, Afridi also met local children who shared their desire for a cricket pitch in their area. He said he would try to help fulfil their request and arrange for a cricket ground to be completed before August 14, Pakistan’s Independence Day.
The former captain’s initiative highlighted both environmental awareness and the need to improve recreational facilities for children living in remote communities.
Afridi has remained involved in various community-focused initiatives, particularly projects aimed at supporting children and improving facilities in underserved areas.
