MUZAFFARABAD — Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Chaudhry Anwar-ul-Haq, is facing a stiff challenge as early unofficial results from the third phase of local government elections show him trailing his Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) opponent.

The vote, seen as a litmus test for the incumbent administration’s popularity, has turned into a nail-biter. Supporters of the PML-N candidate have begun celebrating in key constituencies, signaling a potential shift in the region’s political landscape.

The pressure on the Prime Minister is palpable. Sources close to the administration suggest the results are “unexpectedly tight,” a phrasing often used by political insiders when a sitting leader’s base begins to crack. If the trend holds, it forces a difficult conversation for the current leadership regarding their regional influence and the strength of their coalition.

Election officials have urged patience, noting that while polling station returns favor the PML-N in several critical districts, the final tally remains subject to verification. Still, the early lead is more than just a statistical blip; it reflects a growing dissatisfaction among voters regarding local governance and economic policy.

Analysts point to the persistent inflation and infrastructure delays as the primary drivers behind the current sentiment. Voters in the region have grown vocal about the disparity between campaign promises and the reality on the ground.

The opposition has been quick to capitalize on the momentum. PML-N leadership claims the results indicate a “clear mandate for change,” though they remain cautious until the Election Commission of AJK releases the official, finalized figures.

The final tally will determine whether the Prime Minister can retain his political standing or if he must prepare for a significant reshuffle in his regional strategy. For now, the streets of Muzaffarabad remain tense as the last of the ballot boxes are counted.
