Nails are often considered a cosmetic feature, but changes in their appearance can sometimes provide useful clues about a person’s health. However, nail changes are not specific enough to diagnose a disease on their own.

Healthy nails generally grow gradually and have a relatively consistent colour and texture. Changes can occur because of everyday activities, minor injuries, aging, nutritional problems, infections or other health conditions.

Brittle nails are particularly common. They can result from repeated exposure to water, detergents, cleaning products or nail cosmetics. Frequent washing and drying of the hands can also make nails more fragile.

Ridges running vertically along the nails are also common and can become more noticeable with age. By contrast, sudden changes across several nails may deserve further evaluation.

Nail colour can change for many reasons. Yellow or thickened nails may occur because of fungal infections, while staining from nail polish or other substances can also alter their appearance.

Certain nutritional deficiencies may influence nail health. Iron deficiency, for example, can be associated with some changes in nail structure. Other medical conditions may also affect nail growth and appearance.

However, it is important not to assume that every unusual nail is a sign of serious disease. Minor trauma, genetics, aging and everyday habits can produce many harmless changes.

Doctors generally consider nail findings together with other symptoms and a person’s medical history. Laboratory tests or other examinations may be necessary when an underlying medical problem is suspected.

People should seek professional advice if they notice sudden nail changes, persistent discoloration, significant pain, swelling, unexplained separation of the nail or a dark streak that does not disappear.

Good nail care includes keeping nails clean and dry, avoiding unnecessary exposure to harsh chemicals and maintaining a balanced diet.

The most important point is that nails can sometimes offer health clues, but they cannot replace a proper medical examination or diagnosis.
