Even relatively low levels of physical activity may provide health benefits for people living with atrial fibrillation (AF), a common heart rhythm disorder associated with an increased risk of stroke.

Atrial fibrillation occurs when the upper chambers of the heart beat irregularly. The abnormal rhythm can affect how blood moves through the heart and may increase the likelihood of blood clot formation.

If a clot travels to the brain, it can cause an ischemic stroke. As a result, preventing stroke is a major component of managing atrial fibrillation.

Physical activity has long been recognised as an important part of cardiovascular health. Regular movement can help support healthy body weight, blood pressure, fitness and metabolic health.

The important point is that physical activity does not always have to be intense to be beneficial. Light activities such as walking and regular daily movement can provide an alternative for people who are unable to perform vigorous workouts.

Reducing sedentary behaviour can also be useful. People who spend long periods sitting may benefit from taking regular movement breaks and incorporating more activity into daily routines.

However, exercise recommendations for people with AF should be individualised. Factors such as age, symptoms, medications, cardiovascular fitness and other health conditions can influence what type and intensity of activity is appropriate.

People with AF should discuss new exercise routines with their healthcare professionals when necessary, especially if they have significant symptoms or other cardiovascular conditions.

Warning signs such as chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness or significant symptoms during exercise should not be ignored.

Physical activity is only one part of stroke prevention. Depending on individual risk factors, people with AF may also require medications and management of conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes and other cardiovascular risks.

The findings support the broader message that maintaining an active lifestyle can be valuable even when activity levels are modest.

For many people, starting with manageable movement and gradually increasing activity may be a more realistic approach than attempting intense exercise immediately.
