New research suggests that reducing protein intake may have potential benefits for healthy aging and longevity. A review published in Cell Press Blue analyzed more than 350 laboratory and animal studies, finding that moderate protein restriction may improve metabolism, reduce inflammation and limit cellular damage.

Researchers also examined specific amino acids, including methionine, isoleucine and valine. In animal studies, restricting these nutrients was linked to longer lifespans and changes in biological pathways associated with aging. However, researchers have not yet shown that eating less protein extends lifespan in humans.

Experts caution that protein remains essential for maintaining muscles, supporting recovery and performing many vital functions. Older adults, athletes, children, pregnant people and those recovering from illness may actually need more protein rather than less.

The findings therefore do not mean people should simply cut protein from their diets. Instead, they highlight the need for further human research to determine how much protein is appropriate at different stages of life
