IOWA: Health officials in Iowa are responding to a measles outbreak in the southern part of the state after 12 cases were confirmed, with evidence indicating that the virus is spreading from person to person. The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services is working with local health agencies, affected families and community leaders to contain the outbreak.

Officials have also warned residents about possible public exposures after infected individuals visited several locations while they were contagious. The identified sites include stores and healthcare facilities in Bloomfield, Clive, West Des Moines and Des Moines.

Health authorities said they are working to identify people who may have been exposed, provide information to communities and ensure that residents have access to vaccination. People who are unvaccinated against measles or are uncertain about their immunity have been advised to contact a healthcare professional or local public health agency about the MMR vaccine.

Measles is highly contagious and can spread through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Common symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, red or watery eyes and a characteristic skin rash. Serious complications can include pneumonia and inflammation of the brain, particularly among vulnerable groups.

Officials are urging people who believe they may have been exposed and develop symptoms to contact their healthcare provider before arriving at a medical facility. Calling ahead allows healthcare workers to take precautions and reduce the risk of exposing other patients and staff.

The latest outbreak has raised concern because Iowa recorded only nine measles cases during the entire year of 2025, while the state has already reached 12 confirmed cases in the current outbreak. Health authorities continue to monitor the situation and investigate potential additional exposures.
