ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Malaysia have agreed to strengthen intelligence-sharing mechanisms to combat terrorism, drug trafficking and human smuggling, officials said following a high-level meeting in Islamabad on Saturday.

The understanding was reached during a meeting between Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Malaysian Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution bin Ismail. The meeting was followed by delegation-level talks attended by senior officials from both countries.

The two sides reviewed bilateral relations and discussed ways to expand cooperation in internal security and law enforcement.

Their discussions covered counterterrorism measures, anti-drug operations, prevention of illegal immigration, human smuggling and efforts to tackle cybercrime.

Both ministers agreed that stronger intelligence sharing would help identify and disrupt networks involved in terrorism and narcotics trafficking. They also discussed measures to improve joint efforts against human smuggling.

Pakistan and Malaysia further agreed to strengthen institutional cooperation between the National Police Academy of Pakistan and the Royal Malaysian Police College. The two sides discussed expanding training programmes, exchanging expertise and improving professional capabilities in law enforcement.

Cooperation in the coast guard sector also remained an important part of the talks. The ministers agreed to establish a joint working group and enhance security cooperation in coast guard operations and related areas.

Mohsin Naqvi expressed confidence that the Malaysian minister’s visit would help deepen bilateral relations and create new opportunities for cooperation.

He described Malaysia as an important partner for Pakistan and praised the country’s economic and social development.

The meeting also covered tourism and visa facilitation. Both sides discussed ways to promote travel between the two countries and simplify visa procedures.

Naqvi said Malaysia remained a popular destination for Pakistani travellers and expressed hope that increased employment quotas would enable more Pakistanis to seek jobs in Malaysia through legal channels.

Both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across security, law enforcement, tourism and other areas of mutual interest.

Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry, the Federal Interior Secretary, Director General FIA, Inspector General Federal Constabulary, National Coordinator Nacta, Director General Passports, and senior Islamabad administration and police officials also attended the meeting.
