At least 6 killed after gunman opens fire in Kyiv
Kyiv, April 18: At least six people were killed and 14 others injured after a gunman opened fire in Ukraine’s capital on Saturday before taking hostages inside a supermarket, Ukrainian officials said. The attacker was later shot dead by police after a standoff in Kyiv’s Holosiivskyi district.
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said the assailant first opened fire on people in the street, killing four, before entering the supermarket, where another person was killed. A sixth victim later died in hospital, raising the death toll to six. Four hostages were rescued after special police units stormed the building when negotiations failed.
Officials said negotiators had spoken with the gunman for about 40 minutes before tactical units moved in. The attacker was killed while resisting arrest, according to authorities. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed condolences to the victims’ families and said the circumstances of the shooting were under investigation.
Local authorities said the suspect was a 58-year-old man who legally owned the weapon used in the attack. Ukraine’s security service is investigating the incident, including the motive and how the suspect obtained medical certification linked to firearm ownership.
