MAZATLAN, MEXICO — A massive humpback whale washed up on a popular stretch of coastline in Mazatlán early Tuesday, drawing crowds of onlookers and triggering an urgent response from local marine biologists.

The carcass, estimated to be roughly 40 feet long, was discovered by morning beachgoers near the Cerritos area. It was already in a state of advanced decomposition, emitting a potent odor that forced local authorities to cordon off a significant portion of the sand.

Why the whale died remains a mystery. There were no immediate signs of net entanglement or clear trauma from a vessel strike, though experts caution that the state of the remains makes a definitive necropsy difficult.

“We are dealing with a complex situation,” said Dr. Elena Ruiz, a marine biologist coordinating the site investigation. “The tide brought it in during the night, and now our primary concern is public health and the logistics of removing a mammal of this size before the heat accelerates the decay further.”

Local environmental agencies are working with heavy machinery contractors to clear the beach. Removing a carcass of this magnitude isn’t straightforward; it requires a coordinated effort to prevent the remains from being swept back into the surf, where they could pose a hazard to navigation or attract sharks closer to the swimming zones.

While humpback sightings are common along Mexico’s Pacific coast during migration season, strandings of this size are relatively rare in this specific resort area. Officials are currently collecting tissue samples to check for potential toxins or underlying illnesses that might explain the stranding.

For now, the beach remains partially closed. Authorities have urged tourists to keep their distance, citing both the biological hazards of a decomposing marine mammal and the risk of the carcass shifting unexpectedly as the tide moves.

Once the cleanup is complete, the remains will be transported to a secure landfill site for disposal, marking a grim end to what researchers hope was an isolated incident.
