Tokyo police are scouring surveillance footage after a brazen smash-and-grab at a high-end mall in the Ginza district left a luxury watch boutique missing over $1.2 million in inventory.

The heist took place shortly after 4:00 a.m. local time on Tuesday. Three masked individuals shattered the reinforced glass storefront of the boutique, cleared the display cases in under two minutes, and fled in a waiting vehicle before local patrol officers could arrive.

Investigators are currently analyzing CCTV from the mall’s perimeter. While the store’s alarm system triggered instantly, the suspects’ speed suggests a pre-planned operation, likely involving reconnaissance of the mall’s security blind spots.

“They knew exactly which cases held the highest-value items,” said a senior investigator familiar with the case. “This wasn’t a crime of opportunity; it was a targeted strike.”

The haul includes several limited-edition Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet timepieces. These watches are notoriously difficult to liquidate through traditional channels, leading detectives to suspect the items were stolen to fulfill specific orders from private collectors in the black market.

Ginza, long considered the epicenter of Tokyo’s luxury retail scene, has seen a recent uptick in high-stakes retail theft. This incident marks the third significant robbery in the district this year, forcing local business owners to reconsider their nighttime security measures.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the store remains cordoned off for forensic processing. No arrests have been made, and police are now checking traffic cameras across the district to track the suspects’ getaway route.

For now, the boutique’s management is working with insurance adjusters to finalize the inventory loss, while the store remains shuttered indefinitely.
