MQM-Pakistan leader Mustafa Kamal has publicly offered to face accountability regarding the PIMS hospital incident, a move aimed at distancing his party from the controversy surrounding the recent unrest.

The offer comes as political pressure mounts following the violent clashes that erupted at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad. Kamal’s statement serves as a tactical pivot, attempting to shift the narrative from defensive denial to a show of transparency as investigations into the hospital facility’s security breach gain momentum.

The PIMS incident, which saw protesters and security personnel clash within the hospital premises, has sparked nationwide outrage. Patients were left stranded during the chaos, and critical medical infrastructure was reportedly damaged. For Kamal, the political stakes are high; his party is currently navigating a fragile coalition, and any association with the breakdown of law and order in the capital could prove costly.

“I am ready to stand before any inquiry commission,” Kamal told reporters during a brief press interaction Tuesday. He stopped short of admitting fault, framing his offer instead as a commitment to the rule of law.

Critics, however, remain skeptical. Opposition figures have dismissed the offer as a “staged gesture,” noting that the MQM-P has yet to provide specific details on how they intend to cooperate with the ongoing police investigation.

The investigation is now moving into a critical phase. Law enforcement officials have begun reviewing CCTV footage from the hospital’s emergency ward, where the bulk of the violence occurred. While no formal charges have been filed against the party leadership, the focus has shifted to identifying the individuals who led the charge into the restricted zones of the facility.

Kamal’s attempt to get ahead of the inquiry reflects a broader strategy to maintain political relevance while avoiding the fallout of the PIMS debacle. Whether this gambit succeeds depends on the findings of the investigators — and how much room the government is willing to give its coalition partners when the final report drops.

The question now isn’t just about accountability, but whether the government will allow the investigation to reach the party’s upper echelons or if it will stop at the foot soldiers on the ground.
