Additional Inspector General (AIG) Karachi, Ghulam Nabi Memon, has ordered a formal inquiry into the violent brawl that erupted in the city’s upscale Defence Housing Authority (DHA) neighborhood. The move follows the circulation of viral video footage showing a group of armed men assaulting a citizen in public view.
The incident, which took place late Tuesday, sparked immediate public outrage on social media. The footage shows at least four men—some brandishing firearms—confronting and physically attacking a man near a commercial hub in DHA. Bystanders watched as the attackers fled the scene in a luxury vehicle before police arrived.
AIG Memon directed the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South to identify the individuals involved and submit a report within 24 hours. “No one is above the law,” a spokesperson for the Karachi Police said Wednesday morning, confirming that specialized teams are currently tracking the vehicle’s registration and reviewing CCTV footage from nearby businesses.
For residents of the area, the incident is a stark reminder of the growing impunity associated with private security details and influential figures in Karachi. While DHA is marketed as one of the city’s most secure districts, recent months have seen a rise in “road rage” incidents involving armed escorts.
Legal experts warn that the case tests the police department’s ability to remain impartial when powerful interests are at play. If the suspects are identified as having ties to local political or business elites, the investigation will face significant pressure to stall.
“We are treating this as a high-priority case,” the investigating officer told local reporters. “The identities of those involved will be made public once the initial forensic analysis of the footage is complete.”
The victim, who sustained minor injuries, has yet to file a formal First Information Report (FIR). Police officials stated that they are prepared to register a case on behalf of the state if the victim remains hesitant to pursue legal action.
As the inquiry begins, the focus remains on whether the Karachi Police can move beyond procedural optics and ensure the suspects face charges for public endangerment and assault. For now, the video remains the primary piece of evidence, and the streets of DHA are under increased surveillance.
