Punjab’s electricity grid is buckling under a severe fuel shortage, leaving millions of residents across the province facing unannounced and prolonged load-shedding.

The crisis stems from a critical lack of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and furnace oil supplies, forcing several thermal power plants to operate at a fraction of their capacity. Power distribution companies (DISCOs) are struggling to bridge a supply-demand gap that has widened to over 5,000 megawatts during peak hours.

For households in Lahore, Faisalabad, and Multan, the impact is immediate. Power cuts are stretching up to eight hours in some urban centers, while rural areas report even longer blackouts. The persistent heat, coupled with the instability of the grid, has brought daily life to a crawl.

Energy sector insiders point to a systemic failure in fuel procurement. “The shipments didn’t arrive on time, and our reserves were already at rock bottom,” a senior official at the Power Division said. He spoke on condition of anonymity, acknowledging that the government’s inability to secure timely spot-market cargoes has essentially paralyzed the generation sector.

The shortfall isn’t just about poor planning; it’s a direct hit to the national exchequer. With expensive oil-fired plants forced to run to compensate for the lack of cheaper gas-based generation, the cost of producing a single unit of electricity has spiked. This burden will inevitably land on the consumer in the form of higher fuel price adjustments on next month’s bills.

Industrialists are already feeling the heat. In the textile hubs of Faisalabad, factory owners report that production lines are grinding to a halt. When power isn’t consistent, machinery fails and deadlines are missed. Many are now burning diesel in private generators, a move that is pushing their overhead costs to unsustainable levels.

The Petroleum Division claims that new shipments are expected to reach the port by the weekend, promising a gradual stabilization of the grid. But for the average citizen sitting in the dark, the promise of relief days from now offers little comfort against the reality of today’s sweltering, powerless afternoon.
