RIYADH — Saudi Arabia has officially launched its first national Food Composition Database, a move aimed at tackling the country’s rising rates of obesity and diet-related illness. The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) unveiled the digital repository this week, providing a comprehensive catalog of nutritional values for thousands of locally consumed food items.

For years, nutritionists and public health officials in the Kingdom have relied on international data—often based on American or European diets—to calculate caloric intake and nutritional deficiencies. That changes now. The new database tracks the specific chemical and nutritional makeup of foods found on Saudi shelves, from traditional dishes to imported processed goods.

The stakes are high. Nearly 60% of the adult population in Saudi Arabia is classified as overweight or obese, according to recent Ministry of Health figures. Diabetes rates remain among the highest in the Middle East. By digitizing the nutritional profile of the local food supply, the government is looking to move beyond general health advice and toward precision public health policy.

“We aren’t just tracking calories,” said an official involved in the project. “We are mapping the actual nutritional footprint of the Saudi diet.”

The database acts as a foundational tool for the food industry, researchers, and policymakers. Manufacturers can now use the data to reformulate products, reducing sugar, salt, and saturated fats in line with the Kingdom’s “Vision 2030” health goals. It also provides a standardized reference for restaurants and catering companies to display accurate nutritional information on menus—a practice that has been inconsistently applied until now.

The project didn’t happen overnight. It involved years of laboratory testing on local food products to ensure the data reflects the reality of the Saudi marketplace. Unlike generic global databases, this one accounts for regional variances in preparation methods and ingredients specific to the Gulf.

Healthcare providers are already looking at how to integrate this data into patient care. Dietitians expect to use the repository to create personalized meal plans that are not only scientifically accurate but culturally relevant.

While the database provides the data, the challenge for the SFDA remains enforcement and public adoption. The government has signaled that this is merely the first step in a broader strategy to overhaul the national food environment. Officials say the next phase will involve stricter regulations on front-of-package labeling, ensuring consumers see the data in the aisles, not just in a government portal.

For a population increasingly reliant on processed convenience foods, the database offers a rare, clear look at exactly what is on the plate. Whether that transparency translates into lower disease rates, however, will depend on how quickly the industry adjusts its recipes to match the new national standards.
