The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a nationwide alert as a new weather system moves into the country, bringing heavy rains and thunderstorms starting today. The system is expected to persist through the weekend, threatening to disrupt daily life in urban centers and mountain regions alike.

The downpour will hit northern areas first, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan, before shifting south toward the plains of Punjab and Sindh. Forecasters expect the most intense activity between Thursday and Saturday.

Urban centers like Lahore and Karachi face a familiar risk: sudden street flooding. Municipal authorities have been put on high alert, though residents remain skeptical given the recurring failure of drainage systems during past deluges. For those in the northern mountainous regions, the danger is more severe. The PMD explicitly warned of potential landslides in high-altitude areas, which could block vital supply routes and isolate remote villages.

Farmers across the agricultural heartlands are watching the sky with mixed emotions. While the rain offers a necessary break from heat, unexpected heavy water can damage standing crops. Agriculture experts note that if the wind speeds accompany the rain as predicted, the impact on wheat and seasonal vegetable yields could be significant.

This weather pattern follows a period of unseasonable warmth, creating an atmospheric instability that meteorologists say is primed for lightning strikes and gusty winds. Power distribution companies are bracing for grid failures, a common consequence of high-voltage surges during severe electrical storms in the region.

Emergency services are on standby, but the PMD’s message to the public is simple: avoid unnecessary travel during the peak of the storms. As the clouds gather, the focus shifts to whether infrastructure will hold or if the country is once again headed for a weekend of widespread utility outages and gridlocked traffic.
