Motorists hit with incorrect traffic fines now have a direct route to clear their records. Traffic authorities have officially launched an online grievance portal, allowing citizens to challenge e-challans they believe were issued in error.

The system replaces the tedious, often fruitless, process of visiting district traffic offices in person. Previously, contesting a faulty ticket meant burning hours in queues and navigating bureaucratic red tape. Now, the entire dispute process sits on a digital dashboard.

Drivers need only upload the challan number along with supporting evidence—such as timestamped dashcam footage or photographs proving their vehicle was elsewhere at the time of the alleged violation. The portal tracks the status of these disputes, promising a response within a set window of five to seven working days.

Officials say the move addresses a spike in complaints regarding technical glitches and misidentified license plates. Automated cameras, while efficient, have frequently flagged the wrong vehicles due to blurred plates or software misreads.

“We recognize the frustration caused by phantom fines,” said a spokesperson for the traffic department. “This portal isn’t just about convenience; it’s about holding the automated enforcement system accountable.”

Despite the rollout, legal experts warn that the burden of proof remains firmly on the driver. Simply claiming a fine is wrong won’t suffice. The portal requires clear, verifiable documentation to trigger a reversal. If the evidence is deemed insufficient, the ticket remains valid, and the standard late-payment penalties will still apply.

The department has integrated the system with the national vehicle database to ensure that once a fine is overturned, the status updates across all provincial and federal traffic records automatically.

For those who still prefer traditional methods, the option to walk into a traffic facilitation center remains open. However, for the department, the goal is clear: push the majority of volume online to unclog physical offices and speed up the resolution of clerical errors.

If you believe a fine was wrongly issued, the window to contest is limited to 15 days from the date of the challan. Beyond that, the department considers the ticket undisputed, and the payment becomes mandatory.
