The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) is facing its largest Ebola outbreak on record, with confirmed cases surpassing 6,000 as the deadly disease continues to spread across several provinces. Government figures showed that 6,041 confirmed cases and 2,911 deaths had been recorded by August 31, giving the outbreak a case-fatality rate of about 48.2 percent.
The outbreak, which began in Ituri Province, has now affected around 60 health zones across six provinces, including Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uele, Bas-Uele and Tshopo. Ituri remains the epicentre, accounting for the majority of confirmed infections.
Health authorities are particularly concerned about the rapid pace of transmission. The current outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, a less common species of Ebola virus. The strain presents an additional challenge because there is currently no vaccine or treatment specifically approved for Bundibugyo virus.
Despite the high death toll, more than 1,300 patients have recovered, providing some encouragement to health officials and response teams. Medical workers and international organisations are continuing surveillance, laboratory testing, infection-control measures, patient care and community awareness campaigns in affected areas.
The World Health Organization has described the situation as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, citing the continued transmission and expansion of the outbreak into new areas. WHO has also warned of the risk of the virus spreading across international borders, making regional cooperation and surveillance essential.
Vaccination efforts have also begun among healthcare workers using the Ervebo vaccine, which is effective against the Zaire species of Ebola. However, WHO says it is not yet known whether the vaccine protects people against Bundibugyo virus, and clinical research is being conducted to gather evidence.
The outbreak is being further complicated by insecurity, population displacement, limited healthcare resources and difficulties reaching affected communities. Authorities and international health partners are therefore working to strengthen disease monitoring and prevent further transmission as the outbreak continues to pose a serious public health threat.
