The fire didn’t start with a roar; it started with the smell of scorched pine and a sudden, unnatural stillness in the New Forest. For Sarah and Mark Jenkins, a weekend hiking trip turned into a frantic race for survival as a fast-moving blaze swept through the undergrowth near Beaulieu on Saturday afternoon.

“One minute we were looking at the ponies, the next the sky turned a bruised purple,” Sarah said. “We didn’t hear a siren. We heard the crackle of dry gorse turning into a wall of heat.”

The couple, caught nearly two miles from their car, found themselves boxed in by the rapid spread. With temperatures soaring above 30°C and winds gusting at 25 mph, the fire jumped firebreaks that should have acted as natural barriers.

“You don’t think about the logistics when the air starts burning your lungs,” Mark said. “Adrenaline takes the wheel. We just ran toward the nearest clearing we could spot on the map.”

Local fire crews arrived within twenty minutes, but the terrain made access a nightmare. Specialized off-road appliances had to navigate narrow, rutted tracks, slowing the initial response. By the time the blaze was brought under control late Saturday night, over 40 hectares of heathland had been reduced to ash.

Forestry officials are now pointing to an unusually dry spring as the primary culprit. The lack of rainfall left the forest floor covered in a tinderbox of dead bracken and dry peat—a combination that makes even a discarded cigarette or a stray spark from a barbecue lethal.

The incident has triggered an immediate ban on open fires and portable barbecues across the entire New Forest National Park. It’s a move that local authorities say is long overdue, given the increasing frequency of heatwaves in the region.

For the Jenkins, the escape was a matter of timing. They reached the gravel track just as the fire crested the ridge behind them. They didn’t look back until they were safely inside their vehicle, windows rolled up against the thickening smoke.

“The forest is beautiful, but it’s fragile,” Mark said. “We were lucky. The next person might not be.”
