Fuel prices are set to climb again. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) announced a fresh hike late Tuesday, pushing the cost of petrol perilously close to the Rs400-per-liter mark.

For the average commuter, the math is simple: transportation costs are becoming unsustainable. The latest adjustment—an increase of Rs9.50 per liter—comes just two weeks after the previous review, leaving households with little room to adjust their monthly budgets.

The finance ministry maintains that these adjustments are mandatory to meet International Monetary Fund (IMF) conditions. Officials argue that global oil price volatility and the ongoing depreciation of the rupee leave them with no fiscal space to provide subsidies.

“We are essentially passing on the cost of international market fluctuations,” a senior official at the petroleum division told reporters on the condition of anonymity. “Maintaining current prices would require heavy borrowing, which we can no longer afford.”

The impact is immediate. Public transport fares in major hubs like Karachi and Lahore have already begun to creep upward. Drivers are responding by reducing non-essential travel, while logistics companies are warning that the cost of moving goods will inevitably be passed down to the consumer at the grocery store.

This isn’t just about the pump price. It’s the third increase in less than two months. The government’s strategy relies heavily on tax collection through the Petroleum Development Levy (PDL), a primary source of revenue meant to bridge the country’s massive budget deficit.

Critics, however, point to the lack of transparency in how these prices are calculated. Independent energy analysts suggest that if the government streamlined the supply chain and addressed inefficiencies in state-run oil companies, the burden on the public could be mitigated.

As of midnight, the new rates take effect across all retail outlets. With the Rs400 threshold now within striking distance, the economic pressure on middle- and low-income families is reaching a breaking point.
