Pakistan Customs officials have recovered 14 new iPhones allegedly hidden beneath a commode in a washroom at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport, officials said on Saturday.
According to the Collectorate of Customs, the passenger had arrived in Karachi from Hong Kong and allegedly attempted to evade customs checks by concealing the mobile phones inside an airport washroom. Customs officials reportedly became suspicious after the passenger remained inside the washroom for around 20 minutes.
After the passenger returned from the washroom, customs officials searched his luggage and recovered two bottles of liquor. During questioning, he reportedly admitted that he had hidden the mobile phones inside the washroom after noticing the presence of customs personnel.
A customs team subsequently searched the washroom and found 14 new iPhones concealed underneath a commode. The mobile phones and liquor were seized under the Customs Act, according to officials.
Customs authorities estimated the combined value of the seized items at approximately Rs5 million. The recovery highlights the measures being taken by customs officials at the airport to detect attempts to evade customs procedures and duties.
The authorities have taken the recovered phones and liquor into custody, while further legal proceedings are expected to be conducted in accordance with applicable customs laws.
