SAN FRANCISCO: OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT’s shopping capabilities with new tools that allow shoppers to preview clothing and accessories on themselves and save products for later.
The update introduces a virtual try-on option for supported fashion products. When a “Try on” button appears alongside a clothing or accessory listing, users can take or upload a selfie and have ChatGPT generate an image showing how the item could look on them.
The feature also works with product images uploaded directly into a conversation, allowing shoppers to ask ChatGPT to create a virtual preview of clothing or accessories they find elsewhere.
OpenAI cautions that the generated images are visual simulations and may not accurately represent a product’s exact appearance, size or fit. Shoppers are advised to check measurements and other information provided by the retailer before making a purchase.
Alongside virtual try-on, OpenAI has introduced Favorites, giving users a way to bookmark products discovered through ChatGPT. Saved products can be accessed through the ChatGPT Library and organised into folders for future reference.
Reference photos used for virtual try-ons can also be saved for subsequent shopping sessions, while users have the option to replace or delete them through ChatGPT’s personalization settings.
The additions expand ChatGPT’s existing product-discovery features, which already allow shoppers to search conversationally, browse visual results, upload images to find similar products and compare items based on details such as prices, reviews and features.
The latest update further positions ChatGPT as a visual shopping and product-discovery tool, combining product search with AI-generated previews and saved collections.
