Pakistan’s finance minister has met with the US Treasury Under Secretary to discuss the country’s economic outlook, ongoing structural reforms and external financing requirements. The meeting focused on Pakistan’s economic priorities, efforts to maintain financial stability and measures aimed at strengthening the country’s economic position.
Discussions also covered the importance of continuing economic reforms to improve fiscal management, increase investor confidence and support sustainable growth. Pakistan’s efforts to address financial challenges, manage external financing needs and maintain macroeconomic stability remain important areas of focus as the country works to strengthen its economy.
The finance minister also highlighted Pakistan’s recent return to international capital markets, including the issuance of a US$3 billion Eurobond in September 2026. He outlined plans to diversify financing sources through Sukuk, Panda bonds and other financial instruments to reduce reliance on limited funding channels and improve debt management.
Another key area of discussion was Pakistan’s external economic position amid regional tensions and uncertainty in global energy markets. The talks addressed the potential impact of regional conflict on energy supplies, inflation and food security, alongside preparations to ensure adequate supplies during winter.
Aurangzeb also emphasized export-led growth, stronger information technology exports, improved competitiveness of Pakistani goods and sustainable debt management. He discussed privatization initiatives, airport outsourcing and potential financing through the US Export-Import Bank (EXIM), while expressing appreciation for continued US support for Pakistan’s economic reform efforts.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the World Bank Group–International Monetary Fund (IMF) Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Thailand, on October 16, 2026. The discussions formed part of Pakistan’s broader engagement with international financial institutions and investors to strengthen economic stability and expand financing opportunities.
