IMF Chief Warns AI Risks Could Outweigh Benefits Without Safeguards and Ethical Framework

The head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned that artificial intelligence (AI) could pose significant economic and social risks if effective safeguards, responsible governance, and a strong ethical framework do not accompany its rapid development.

AI is transforming industries worldwide by improving productivity, automating routine tasks and creating new opportunities for innovation. However, its growing influence also raises concerns about job displacement, income inequality, data privacy and the potential misuse of advanced technologies. Without appropriate policies, the benefits of AI could be concentrated among a limited number of companies and countries, widening existing economic gaps.

IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva called for a mix of industry self-regulation and government involvement to create practical safeguards. She stressed that major AI-producing countries, including the United States, China and India, should cooperate in developing common standards.

She also emphasized that access to reliable electricity, digital infrastructure and appropriate regulation is essential to ensure that AI benefits people across countries, including developing economies. Experts at the discussions warned that AI could disrupt labour markets and financial stability if productivity gains fail to meet expectations.

The warning highlights the need for international cooperation to ensure that AI development remains safe, ethical, and inclusive while allowing innovation to continue.
