KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has ordered an emergency investigation after a six-month-old child tested positive for poliovirus in Karachi’s East district.
The chief minister has directed the relevant authorities to investigate how the child contracted the virus and take immediate measures to prevent further spread. The administration has also been instructed to strengthen containment efforts and review vaccination activities in the affected area.
Polio is a highly infectious viral disease that can cause permanent paralysis, particularly in children. Although it can be prevented through vaccination, continued transmission remains a public health concern in Pakistan.
Health authorities are working to identify the possible source of infection and strengthen preventive measures. Parents are urged to ensure that their children receive polio vaccine doses during every vaccination campaign, even if they have been vaccinated previously.
Repeated vaccination helps build strong immunity and protects children against paralysis caused by poliovirus.
The case highlights the importance of routine immunisation, effective disease surveillance and coordinated efforts to eliminate polio from Pakistan.
