Kinshasa, October 26, 2026 — A nurse has been killed and another healthcare worker seriously injured in an attack while responding to an Ebola alert in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo), according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
The attack took place on Saturday in Bafwasende, a town in the eastern province of Tshopo, as healthcare workers were carrying out their duties in response to the Ebola outbreak. The injured worker was reported to be in serious condition.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus condemned the attack, stressing that healthcare workers must be able to protect communities from the deadly disease without fear of violence. The WHO’s regional director for Africa, Dr Mohamed Yakub Janabi, also called for the protection of medical personnel and warned that misinformation and fear must not lead to violence.
