GILGIT, Government school teachers across Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) have entered the fourth consecutive day of protests and class boycotts, demanding overdue promotions and holding the education department accountable for the ongoing crisis.

Large rallies and demonstrations were held outside education offices in major districts, including Hunza, Nagar, Astore, Skardu, Diamer, Ghanche, Shigar, Kharmang, and Ghizer. A major sit-in continued outside the Directorate of Education in Gilgit City, effectively halting regular school operations.

In response, the government announced a “sports week” for all public sector schools, starting Friday, May 30, 2025, and lasting until the Eid ul Azha holidays, according to an official notification.

GB Finance Minister Muhammad Ismail assured the public that a summary for fund approval would soon be placed before the provincial cabinet to resolve the dispute. Despite these assurances, teachers remain steadfast in their demands, and no resolution has yet been reached.

The protest is being led by the Teachers’ Coordination Committee, which has accused the education department of delaying rightful promotions and ignoring teachers’ longstanding grievances.

This deadlock has disrupted thousands of students across the region, sparking concerns among parents and education advocates about the long-term impact on learning outcomes.
