Gilgit Baltistan has reported its first polio case in seven years. The case was detected in the Diamer district, where a 23-month-old child has been confirmed to be infected with the poliovirus.
The National Institute of Health (NIH) in Islamabad has also confirmed the presence of the poliovirus in the affected child, indicating a re-emergence of the virus in the region.
It is important to note that this is the first time in seven years that the poliovirus has been detected in Gilgit Baltistan. So far in 2025, a total of 11 polio cases have been reported across Pakistan.
