The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has officially announced the extension of the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) program from four years to five years. This change will be implemented starting from the academic session 2024-2025.
According to PMDC President, Professor Dr. Rizwan Taj, the decision was made in view of the challenges faced by Pakistani graduates in securing training and employment opportunities internationally. The revised five-year program will include a final year dedicated to clerkship, followed by a one-year structured house job or internship.
Dr. Rizwan stated that the additional academic year will provide students with a deeper theoretical understanding of dental sciences, thereby enhancing their academic standards. This move aims to align Pakistan’s dental education system with international standards, ultimately enabling Pakistani graduates to gain greater global recognition. The new structure will also equip graduates with advanced skills and knowledge required in the modern dental field.
