Atiqa Odho’s Comments on Arranged Marriages Spark Social Media Uproar

Veteran actress Atiqa Odho’s recent remarks criticizing the concept of arranged marriages have triggered a heated debate on social media, dividing users with mixed reactions.

Speaking on a drama review show aired on a private TV channel, Odho expressed strong disapproval of traditional or forced marriages. She argued that such unions—whether for men or women—lead to psychological pressure and emotional distress.

Highlighting societal norms, she said, “We live in a conservative culture where boys and girls don’t even interact, and suddenly they are forced into lifelong commitments.” Odho further shared that she often meets couples in arranged marriages and finds their responses “shocking and disheartening.”

“It’s beyond understanding,” she added, “that a girl spends her entire life behind a veil, and then is suddenly expected to spend her life with a stranger she barely knows.”

Her statement sparked polarized responses. Some accused her of promoting a “liberal agenda” and criticized her personal life, questioning her credibility given her own reportedly unsuccessful love marriages.

Others criticized the review show itself, claiming it had shifted from drama analysis to personal commentary. One user wrote, “I once believed she was innocent in the liquor case—but now, after her bold statements, I’m not so sure.”

On the other hand, some users defended the evolving concept of arranged marriage, noting that modern-day couples often get the chance to know each other before marriage. They argued it was unfair to label all arranged marriages as forced.

Many also called for a ban on the show and slammed PEMRA for failing to regulate content that sparks public controversy.
