Karachi – June 14, 2025: In a significant move to enhance road safety, Karachi Traffic Police has initiated a city-wide crackdown on heavy vehicle drivers, conducting on-the-spot dope tests for the first time.
According to officials, medical laboratory staff are accompanying traffic police teams at various checkpoints across Karachi. These teams are stopping large trucks and buses to inspect driving licenses, vehicle documents, and collect blood samples to detect the presence of intoxicants such as alcohol or drugs.
A spokesperson for the Karachi Traffic Police stated that any driver who tests positive for substance use will face legal consequences, including the cancellation of their driving license.
This medical screening is essential to ensure the physical and mental fitness of drivers, especially those operating dangerous, oversized vehicles in Karachi, the spokesperson added.
The initiative includes heightened deployment of traffic personnel on major roads and highways where heavy vehicles are commonly in operation. Authorities believe the crackdown will significantly help in reducing fatal road accidents involving large transport vehicles.
