An Australian priest, Gould David, who spent 45 years serving in the Christian clergy, has embraced Islam and now goes by the name Abdul Rahman. His journey toward Islam began during a visit to Perth for a family funeral, where he stayed near a mosque and was gifted a Quran by an imam. The gesture left a deep impression on him, sparking days of reflection and prayer.
David said that he asked God for clarity and began reading the Quran with an open heart. Within days, he described feeling a strong emotional and intellectual connection with the teachings of Islam. He believed it wasn’t just a coincidence, but divine guidance. He stated that accepting Islam wasn’t about rejecting Jesus (Isa A.S.) or Mary (Maryam), but about understanding them in their rightful place in the faith.
After returning home to Tasmania, David officially resigned from his role as a priest, informed his bishop, and took his Shahada (declaration of Islamic faith) over the phone. Later, he visited the Hobart mosque and reaffirmed his Shahada during the Friday prayers, where he was warmly welcomed by the Muslim community.
His story has inspired thousands, as it showcases how faith can transform even the most established paths in life. His quiet decision, grounded in contemplation, shows that spiritual truth can find a person at any stage of life, regardless of past beliefs. Abdul Rahman now begins a new chapter, carrying forward his decades of devotion in a new direction.
This news has been widely shared by the Muslim community across Australia and beyond, with many appreciating the sincerity, depth, and courage of his journey.
