ISLAMABAD- Indonesia has expressed its intent to deepen defence cooperation with Pakistan, particularly in areas of joint defence production and strategic collaboration.

The development came during a meeting between Indonesian Defence Minister Lt Gen (retd) Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad. Both leaders agreed to strengthen bilateral ties across multiple sectors including defence, trade, economy, and strategic cooperation.

According to an official statement, the Indonesian minister conveyed greetings from President Prabowo Subianto and reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to advancing defence relations with Pakistan.

Prime Minister Shehbaz welcomed the gesture and reiterated Pakistan’s desire to expand cooperation across all sectors. He also recalled his recent meeting with President Subianto during the G-8 summit in Cairo, expressing optimism about the future of Pakistan-Indonesia ties.

The two sides agreed to fast-track ongoing projects under the Defence Cooperation Agreement and explore new avenues of collaboration in mutually beneficial ventures.

In a separate meeting at the General Headquarters, the Indonesian minister met with Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir. Discussions focused on regional security and strengthening military cooperation. The Indonesian delegation included senior officials from military and intelligence sectors.

Field Marshal Munir emphasised the need for sustained collaboration to maintain peace and stability in the region. The Indonesian minister appreciated Pakistan Army’s role in counterterrorism and reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to enhanced defence engagement.
